Ocular electrophysiology is a diagnostic field in which the VEP test measures the brain's response to visual stimuli and the ERG test measures the retina's response to light, used in the early evaluation of retinal and optic nerve conditions.
Advanced electrodiagnostic tests play an important role in the early detection and accurate assessment of eye conditions. The VEP (Visual Evoked Potentials) and ERG (Electroretinography) tests used in the diagnosis of eye conditions help identify retinal and optic nerve disorders at an early stage.
Why VEP and ERG Tests Matter
The VEP (Visual Evoked Potential) test measures the electrical response the brain produces to visual stimuli, while the ERG (Electroretinography) test evaluates the response of the retina to light. These two tests are particularly important for identifying the underlying causes of visual disturbances.
Accurate and early assessment of eye conditions directly affects patients’ quality of life. Performing VEP and ERG tests plays an important role in the differential evaluation of retinal and optic nerve disorders. By providing information about the functional state of the optic nerve, VEP tests offer valuable insight, especially in children and in individuals who have difficulty communicating.
The ERG test stands out for its ability to evaluate the function of the different layers of the retina separately. This makes it possible to recognise, at an early stage, many conditions such as congenital retinal disorders, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy.
It is not only the performance of these tests but also the correct interpretation of their results that matters for the diagnostic and follow-up process. The cause of a visual disturbance may not always lie in the front part of the eye; in such cases, electrophysiological assessment helps reveal the functional state of the visual pathways.
To learn more about advanced diagnostic methods related to your eye health and whether such tests may be needed, an assessment can be made during your examination.
Treatments often evaluated together
-
Neuro-Ophthalmology
Neuro-ophthalmology is a field of eye care that evaluates conditions involving the connection between the eyes and the nervous system, including the optic nerve, the nerves controlling eye movement, and pupillary reflexes.
-
Pediatric Eye Diseases
Pediatric eye care focuses on the early diagnosis and follow-up of conditions that can affect a child's developing vision, such as amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus, refractive errors, and congenital eye conditions.
-
Macular Degeneration (Age-Related)
Macular degeneration (age-related macular degeneration) is a retinal condition affecting the macula, the central part of the retina, and is one of the leading causes of central vision loss in older adults.
